Hanya, the shoegaze band from Brighton came to Milton Keynes and despite issues with broken guitar strings, they put on a great performance and adapted to the situation with easy professionalism. Sounding ethreal and dreamy Heathers vocals really captured my imagination with some shoegaze and folk leanings that at times reminded me of both Jane Weaver and Tamara Lindeman of The Weather Station. Meanwhile, the band gave us a swirling soundscape of smooth, 70’s infused guitar work and basslines that hit a mellow yet distinctive grove.
Here’s a band with top-notch writing and playing that draws influence from the past to create something that is both nostalgic yet fresh, exciting, and intoxicating – this is a band that definitely deserves a bigger stage!
